Sufjan Stevens-Michigan

This is his third album from 2003. I picked up a used copy at the store in Kutztown for $9.99. It’s a two record gatefold cover, in like new condition on his own Asthmatic Kitty label. Inside the cover is a map of Michigan with lyrics and liner notes. I’ve played side one a couple of times and liked it, now I can say I like the whole record. Sufjan plays all instruments except for trumpet and trombone. Five of his friends are used as backup vocalists. The songs all have a Michigan theme to them and are mostly acoustic and quiet. There are two nice instrumentals using vibes and glockenspiel. All the songs are good, I really liked “The Upper Peninsula”, “Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head”, “Say Yes To Michigan”, and “They Also Mourn Who Do Not Wear Black(For The Homeless In Muskegon)”. There is a long essay on the back cover about Michigan and the woes of Detroit written by Sufjan. He later made an album called Illinois and joked he would make a record for every state. An interesting artist who makes different styles of music I will have to check out some of his other releases.
