This is the first album from Folk Rock band Steeleye Span. Composed of two Folk duos, Tim Hart and Maddy Prior and Gay and Terry Woods they added Ashley Hutchings, who had been in Fairport Convention to play bass. Released in 1970 this is a 1985 reissue on Shanachie Records. They play traditional instruments like mandolin, fiddle, concertina, dulcimer, and autoharp with electric guitar and bass. Singing all traditional songs, the record starts with an a cappella song in four part harmony. Another a cappella song “My Johnny Was A Shoemaker” features the wonderful voices of Maddy Prior and Gay Woods. “The Blacksmith”, “Blackleg Miner”, and “Lowland Of Holland” are great examples of British Folk Rock. The record comes with an inset with liner notes and the story behind each song on the record.
