Speed The Plough-Speed The Plough

A New Jersey band, members coming from a band called The Trypes that included former members of The Feelies. When The Feelies reformed the remaining members changed the name to Speed The Plough, an old English Folk tune. Thie first record from 1989 it’s one i have on CD as well as a later release of theirs. I liked both CD’s and still have them. I don’t know wher I boght this record but it’s a promo release with a hype sticker on the cover and a hole punched it the upper left corner. The music is a mix of Pop, Folk, Indie, and College Rock. The band members play a variety of instruments including various woodwinds, trumpet, accordion, keyboards, congas, violin, guitars, and bass. The drummer on this record is Jim DeRogatis a Rock critic and the co-host of Sound Opinions a program I’ve listened to on WXPN occasionally. I like all the songs especially “Big Bus” that has an old English Folk sound to it and “Ella’s Way” with some heavy bass and a nice long jam at the end. “Cardinal Rules” is a pleasing instrumental. The band is still active today with some second generation members in the group.
