This is the first record from this British band. They play a mix of Soul,Funk, and Pop led by singer Mike Hucknall’s soulful voice. Thus is one I bought new in 1985 when I was living in Hull. Side one opens with a good song “Come To My Aid” which is the best song on the side although “Heaven” is a Talking Heads song and “Jericho” has a catchy Disco inspired chorus. Side two is very good with two hits “Money’s Too Tight (To Mention)”a great song despite its digs at Ronald and Nancy Reagan and the ballad “Holding Back The Years”. I remember watching the video for “Money’s Too Tight” in Hull and the one for “Holding Back The Years” in February 1986 in the motel room me,my wife, and two kids stayed in before I found a house to rent in Salisbury Md. after getting a job at the shipyard there. “Red Box” and “No Direction” are two bouncy numbers with a bit of Funk to them and the last song “Picture Book” makes use of some synthesized strings and chorus with a measured beat and some of Mike’s best singing. Another song I always liked.
