Savoy Brown is a British Blues band that has gone through many personel changes since 1967 but whose only constant member is founder and guitarist Kim Simmonds. This is another record I remember buying at Village Records at the Tri-State mall in the early 70’s. It was released in late 1970. The first record I bought by them, this is their sixth. I ended up buying four or five of their earlier and later albums but this one has always been my favorite. Besides Simmonds the band at this time included Lonesome Dave Peverett,Tone Stevens and Roger Earl. This line-up also played on their last album. The record begins and ends with two short instrumentals “Gypsy” and “Romanoff” and in between are seven great Blues Rock songs. Four great songs are on side one “Poor Girl”,”Money Can’t Save Your Soul”, that has a long instrumental break between verses with some congas and excellent guitar, “Sunday Night” an instrumental, and “Looking In” one of their most well known songs and heard on the radio in the early 70’s. Side two has another instrumental “Sitting an’ Thinking”,”Take It Easy”,an old style Blues song and “Leavin’ Again” an eight and a half minute song with a long guitar solo in the middle. A really great record and one that has been played many many times. After making this record Peverett,Stevens and Earl left to form Foghat. A shorter version of “Leavin’ Again appeared on their first record. Interestingly in the band photos of Savoy Brown on the inside of the gatefold cover Roger Earl is holding a fishing rod. On Foghat’s Fool For The City album he is fishing in a manhole.
