Pretty Things-S.F. Sorrow

Somewhat of a classic album considered to be the first Rock Opera, released a year before The Who’s Tommy. The narrative of the story is written in a paragraph before each song. It’s the story of a boy(Sebastian F. Sorrow) born in a small town supported by a “Misey Factory”. As he gets older he works at the factory with his father. Later he meets a girl and falls in love. After getting drafted he moves to New York after the war is over. After sending for his girlfriend to meet him her hot air ballon explodes and she dies. Much depressed, he meets Baron Saturday who takes him to a hall of mirrors each one showing him a glimpse ogf his past. After this he slowly goes mad as he gets older and builds a mental wall to seperate him from the rest of the world. The last track is called “Loneliest Person”. The album is somewhat psychedelic in nature ,produced by Norman Smith who produced early Beatles and Pink Floyd recordings. Original members Phil May and Dick Taylor were joined by John “Twink” Adler who was in the band Tomorrow that included future Yes guitarist Steve Howe which had just broken up,and Jon Povey. With some obvious Beatle influences the stadout tracks here are “Privat Sorrow” and “Balloon Burning” which run together and appeared on the five CD box set I owned called Supernatural Fairytales which was sold in 2013.Side one that has those two songs and “S.F. Sorrow Is Born” ,another psychedelic number, is best. The original album was released in 1968 the same week as The Beatles White Album and The Kinks Village Green Preservation Society.A limited edition re-issue with a “Tombstone” shaped gatefold cover in a plastic slipcase with the story and lyrics printed inside. Bought about four years ago.
