Pretty Things-Silk Torpedo

Original

This is a record I bought in 1974 at Village Records at the Tri-State Mall in Claymont,Delaware. The store was in a small wing of the mall. The Merrie Hous bar was across from it,a place I worked at for a while, and the movie theatre was at the end of the wing. Never heard of Pretty Things at the time, probably bought it for the cover by Hipgnosis. The record was one of the first on Zeppelin’s Swan Song label.Pretty Things formed in the early 60’s. Dick Taylor was an early Rolling Stones member. Taylor along with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were attending a London art scholl along with Phil May. When Taylor left the Stones he and May formed Pretty Things. Like the Stones they played R.& B.,later more psychedelic stuff in the late 60’s when Jon Povey joined. May and Povey are the only members left in the current band from that time. This record is pretty good and one I played pretty often back then. Side one has two really good songs “Joey” and “Atlanta”. “Maybe You Tried” has a funky beat not unlike something from The Red Hot Chilie Peppers, others have a Glam Rock sound to them. “Singapore Silk Torpedo” on side two is another good song. Another cover I had hanging on a wall sometime, although the cover is not in very good shape now. The record plays fine.
