Jean- Luc Ponty-Cantelope Island

This is a record I found at the small record store in Mohnton. Its a pairing of two albums released in 1969 on Pacific Jazz records. This re-issue on Blue Note came out in 1976 . The first vrecord called King Kong has the French born Ponty playing Frank Zappa compositions from his earlier records. Ponty was a member of the Mothers Of Invention then and he is joined on the record by fellow Mothers George Duke,Ian Underwood and Artie Tripp. Frank himself plays guitar on a Ponty original “How Would You Like To Have A Head Like That” ,the standout track on the record, that includes a nice sax solo by Ernie Watts who played on Zappa’s The Grand Wazoo album.. Also very good is the 19 minute “Music For Electric Violin And Low Budget Orchestra” with strings, horns, bassoon, and flute. Zappa later re-recordede this as “Revised Music For Guitar And Low Budget Orchestra on his Studio Tan album from ’78. A good example of Jazz Fusion. The cover is not in the best shape but the records are in very good condition.
