Osibisa were a band comprised of four West Africans and three from the Caribbean. They were based in London where this ,their first album ,was recorded and produced by Tony Visconti. Released in 1971 it has the cool Roger Dean cover. This is a used copy I bought about five years ago as much for the cover as the music. It’s a German import and the cover is in very good shape with a high gloss finish as are many European releases. The music is a great blend of Progressive,Jazz and African/Reggae.Mostly instrumental, they employ guitar, sax flute, bass ,organ and percussion. “Ayiko Bia”,the longest song at nearl 8 minutes is pretty representative of the whole album with some African chants, organ and Santana style guitar and a nice percussion break. It was coverd by Ginger Bakers Air Force on their live album I listened to in the first few weeks that I started this project over three years ago. “Akwaaba” and “Oranges” are more Jazz influenced with sax taking the lead but also with more guitar, organ and percission. “Think About The People” the only song with actual lyrics is about pollution and revolution. A really good record I enjoyed listening to although a bit scratchy.
