Nektar-Live In New York

Original

This double album was released in 1977 and one I bought then at Village Records at the Tri-State Mall. This is a German import on Bacillus Records. Recorded at The Academy Of Music in 1974 these two records contain about half the show. A later record, More Live In New York had the rest. I used to have that on CD. A later two CD release contained the whole show. A really great album and my favorite from the band. They play songs from all their records except their first. Remember The Future is represented by two suites each around 8 minutes long Part II on side one and Part I on side three called “I Can See You” with guitarist Roye Albrighton playing an ear splitting solo at the end. Side two is my favorite with “A Day In The Life Of A Preacher” from their Sounds Like This album also including “Oh Willy” from the Down To Earth Album. This 15 minute psychedelic explosion feature more excellent guitar from Roye and lots of great jamming from the band. They go right into 9 minutes of “Desolation Valley” with more guitar in a Jazzy style and some more quiet spacey jamming. One of my favorite long Progressive/Psychedelic jams right up there with Man’s “C’Mon” and Wishbone Ash’s “Pheonix”. Side three has two songs from Down To Earth “That’s Life” and “Show Me The Way” sounding better that the studio versions. Side four starts with “The King Of Twilight” and closes with some good old Rock and Roll with “Woman” and “Good Ol’ Rock’N’Roll” a medley of some 50’s songs. The record itself is not in very good shape .It was played many many times and is very scratchy with quite a few skips. The inside of the gatefold cover has something spilled on it.Possibly bongwater. Cleopatra Records has re-issued it on vinyl and I will be on the lookout for it.
