John Mayall-The Collection

Another one from the European Collector Series. This ones from 1986 out of England. This compilation has songs from 1964 to 1968 from this British Bluesman. It starts of with six tracks from his first two Bluesbreakers album with Eric Clapton on guitar after he left The Yardbirds. These include some blues standards like “Stormy Monday”, “Hoochie Coochie Man” and Freddy King’s instrumental “Hideaway”. There are also two live tracks from ’64 that are not very good quality. After a couple of solo songs there are four with the Bluesbreakers new guitarist Peter Green and bass player John McVie. These 1966 recordings include a Peter Green instrumental “The Super-Natural” that is very recognizable as his playing in Fleetwood Mac .”Suspicions(Part Two)” feature the brass of Dick-Heckstall Smith and Henry Lowther who went on to form Colloseum and the acoustic “Sandy” with Lowther playing violin. The last three songs are from his Blues From Laurel Canyon album with Mick Taylor on guitar. “The Bear” is atribute to Bob “Bear” Hite of Canned Heat who Mayall met while recording the album. “Fly Tomorrow” is a nice long instrumental showing off Mick Taylors guitar playing. Taylor later joined The Rolling Stones as their second guitarist after Brian Jones death. A good collection of songs from one of the fathers of British Blues.
