Manfred Mann’s Earth Band-Solar Fire

Original

The fourth album from his Earth Band from 1973 and the frirst I bought from him.Their first really good record.I had two of their earlier records and they both had some good songs but they were not as consistent as this one. He originally wanted to do an adaptation of Holst’s Classical Planet Suite but was denied permission except for “Joybringer” a U.K. single put on the American release. Mann decideed to do his own planet themed record with two good instrumentals “Pluto The Dog” with a barking dog in the background and “Saturn,Lord Of The Ring/Mercury,Winged Messenge” Dylan’s “Father Of Day,Father Of Night” gets a ten minute re-working with Mann playing a variety of keyboards with some good solos by guitarist Mick Rogers. My favorite is the title track that opens side two. “Solar Fire” has some female backup singers and more great guitar by Rogers. I always loved the heavy bass on that one. A little scratchy but no skips.
