Herbie Mann-Monday Night At The Village Gate

This was recorded at the small N.Y.C. Jazz club in 1965 and released in 1966. This is a used mono recording I bought a few years ago at the record store in Mohnton. Although a mono recording I couldn’t tell the difference between that and stereo.Flute player Mann is backed by a 7 peice band including two trombone players,a latin percussionist and Chick Corea on piano. Corea only has one solo on the opening track “Away From The Crowd”. Most of the solos are on vibrophone and of course flute. The best track on the record is the traditional “Motherless Children” the least Jazz like track on the record with Mann playing some nice solos. The last track “You’re Gonna Make It With Me” a group effort is another good one. Reading the liner notes I see one of the engineers is Tom Dowd who later produced the Allmam Brothers early records. The owner of the club writes that not only do Mann’s fans pay for admission to the show they also drink and eat a lot wishing people who attend other shows would do the same.
