Lindisfarne-Nicely Out Of Tune

Original

They are a band from Newcastle upon Tyne in England. They are a Folk Rock band that formed in the ;late 60’s. This is their first record from 1970. It came packaged with their next two records in a blue plastic slipcase. This was an import that I bought around “74 or ’75. The slipcase has long since fallen apart but I still have the three records on the Charisma label. Alan Hull is the chief songwriter and singer but all members sing, making for some nice harmonies. The group play a variety of instruments including acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, piano, organ, harmonica, violin, and drums. The first song “Lady Eleanor” was released as a single and is one of my favorite songs by them. The acoustic “Winter Song” is an appropriate song for Christmas with lyrics about Christmas presents and Santa and the line “Do you spare one thought for Jesus” in the last verse of the song. “Turn A Deaf Ear” and “Clear White Light” feature their three and four part harmony. Side two has “We Can Swing Together”,a live favorite, and the psychedelic sounding “Alan In The River With Flowers”. “The Things I should Have Said” written by Rod Clements is another good song. They do a rousing version of Woody Guthrie’s “Jackhammer Blues” followed by “Scarecrow Song” another acoustic number to close out the record.
