Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin II

original

This was the first Zeppelin I bought and one of my first thirty or so records i owned. It was one of the free ones I got when joining The Colombia House Record Club in 1970. Of the twelve records my sister got six, as she agreed to buy some of the required ones you had to buy later at list price. The Zeppelin album was more an afterthought, as after the two Three Dog Night albums,5th Dimension and Tommy James and the Shondells records I wanted, I had to pick two more so it was Led Zeppelin II and Iron Butterfly Live. I was still listening to AM radio then (WAMS and WFIL) on my little transistor radio and knew “Whole Lotta Love” from the edited single that was being played. I didn’t like it very much. After playing the record a few times I grew to like it especially after I started listening to FM radio after my parents bought an AM/FM stereo with a record player around 1971 and I discovered my High Schools radio station (WMPH) and Philly station WMMR. My two early favorites on the album were “Thank You” and “Ramble On”. Still with the bad habit of taking Blues songs re-interpreting them and calling them their own. “Whole Lotta Love” was taken from Willie Dixon’s “You Need Love” and the band was sued for plagiarism. “The Lemon Song” was taken from Howlin, Wolf and Robert Johnson songs. “Bring It On Home” is another Willie Dixon song recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson. I had a Sonny Boy Williamson cassette with that song on it and it sounds just like Zeppelins version except for the second part when the electric guitar kicks in. My original album, also played hundreds of times, had long since disappeared. This is a used one I bought some time ago. It is not in the best shape either. It was also re-issued in 2014 with a bonus record of alternate takes and backing tracks. I may pick that one up.
