Various Artists-The First Great Rock Festivals Of The Seventies

Original

Another three record set from 1971 which is around the time I bought it. One record of recordings from The Atlanta Pop Festival and two from The Isle Of Wight Festival, both in the summer of 1970.The best from the Atlanta Festival are two from The Allman Brothers “Statesborough Blues” and Whipping Post”,both songs would be on their great Live at the Fillmore album in 1972,and a 19 minute jam from Mountain covering “Stormy Monday” another song on the Allman’s live album. Also on the first record are two from Poco, one from Johnny Winter and one from The Chambers Brothers. The Isle Of Wight Festival has a more diverse line-up with one from David Bromberg,”Mr. Bojangles”,two from Kris Kristofferson and one from Leonard Cohen. I really did not like these last two. There are two from Sly and the Family Stone that don’t have the energy they showed on The Woodstock Festival, but Cactus plays some down and dirty blues on a 10 minute jam of “No Need To Worry” and “Parchman Farm”. The three best performances on these two records are Jimi Hendrix playing some amazing guitar on 15 minutes of “Power To Love/Midnight Lightning/Foxy Lady,Ten Years After with a 19 minute jam of the Al Kooper song “I Can’t Keep From Cryin’ Sometimes”.Alvin Lee became somewhat of a guitar hero after his performance of “Going’\ Home” from Woodstock and he shows off his prowess here. The final song on the record is a 17 and a half minute composition by Miles Davis “Call It Anything” probably his answer to the the question of what the title of the piece was. The tri fold cover is in fair shape, the records don’t sound to bad considering they are 50 years old.
