Elton John-Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Original

This is one I bought in 1973 when it came out. As with most of my records from that time the cover is not in very good shape and the record is pretty scratchy sounding with a couple of skips. This was played quite a lot when I lived at home and when I moved into the apartment. Pick any of the four sides, they’re all good, although side 4 is the weakest with only “Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting” being a standout track. Side one starts with the 11 minute “Funeral For A Friend” that is almost Progressive sound with its synthesizer and guitar intro. “Bennie And The Jets” is another of my favorite Elton John songs. I love the piano on that one. Unfortunately “Candle In The Wind”, between those two songs, is another one I never liked. Side two has the title track,”Grey Seal”,a re-written song from 1969, “I’ve Seen That Movie Too” and “Jamaica Jerk-Off” all good songs. Side three was my favorite with three songs about women “Sweet Painted Ladies”,”Dirty Little Girl” and “All The Girls Love Alice”. “The Ballad Of Danny Bailey(1909-34)”, the second song, has a nice fadeout jam. When I saw Elton John in concert in ’92 or ’93 I was very happy to hear him play “All The Girls Love Alice” one of his more rocking songs and another favorite. Called by many his best album and I must agree.
