Jefferson Starship-Freedom At Point Zero

The first time I heard these songs was on a New Years Eve concert they did in San Francisco that was broadcast on the radio. I had a new cassette recorder at the time with a timer you could set to record at a certain time. It also had auto reverse so you could record both sides without flipping the tape over. I had to do this because this was when my friend and I decided to go to New York City on New Years Eve. We didn’t make it to Times Square but we got close. Anyway the tape came out fine and I really liked the new songs they were playing. At this point their two lead singers and songwriters, Grace Slick and Marty Balin had left the band. They brought in Mickey Thomas from Elvin Bishop’s band to take the lead vocals. Drummer John Barbata also left and was replaced by Aynsley Dunbar who had just left Journey. Definitely a Rock album,no sappy love songs here. It has two great Rock songs “Jane” and “Rock Music” which got a lot of airplay as well as the title track. Pete Sears and his wife Jeanette wrote two songs the eight minute “Awakening” with a nice long guitar fadeout and “Fading Lady Light” the only mellow song on the record but a good one. Jeanette als wrote two with guitarist Craig Chaquico “Rock Music” and “Just The Same” another good rocking song. Paul Kantner wrote three by himself and one with his 9 year old daughter China. Two of those songs “Lightning Rose(Carry The Fire)” and “Things To Come” sound like good old Jefferson Starship songs from their early days. A really great album, certainly one of their best. The record was released in November of 1979. As I had the live concert were they played all but one song from the album I didn’t feel the need to buy the record. I did eventually buy this used copy sometime in the 80’s.
