The first official Jefferson Starship album although Grace Slick and Paul Kantner get top billing. Released in the summer of 1974 it’s one I bought as soon as it came out. The same core line-up that played on Baron Von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun adding Pete Sears who shares bass and keyboard duties with David Freiberg. The first song “Ride The Tiger” is a good one followed by “That’s For Sure” and Slicks “Be Young You” the only dud on the album. The last song on side one “Caroline” ,one of Starship’s best, written by Marty Balin and Paul Kantner and sung by Balin is certainly one of my favorites. Side two stars with “Devil’s Den” written by Slick and Creach and features Papa John’s fiddle playing. “Come To Life” is another acoustic flavored song by David Frieberg and Robert Hunter and “All Fly Away” was written by someone named Tom Pacheco, both good songs. “Hyperdrive” another Science Fiction Themed song written by Slick and Sears has a Progressive sound to it. Overall a good record and one I listened to a lot. Still sounds pretty good. One skip.
