One of the greatest live albums of all time this was recorded over two nights at the Fillmore East On May 28 and 29 1971. Another one of my earliest records this was bought sometime in 1972 or early ’73. Of the 7 songs on the record only one is written by the band the others being Blues and Soul covers. The record starts with “Four Day Creep” by Ida Cox then “I’m Ready” by Willie Dixon the band putting their own Hard Rock spin on them. Side one closes with “Stone Cold Fever” from their album Rock On. Side two is an amazing 24 minute cover of Dr. John’s “Walk On Gilded Splinters”. The song goes though many moods from loud guitars to a long quiet section with Jerry Shirley and Greg Ridley playing some rhythm joined by Steve Marriott playing some harmonica before Peter Frampton explodes with a long guitar solo then going quiet again for the last verse of the song. Side three is a 16 minute loose interpretation of “Rolling Stone” by Muddy Waters with Marriott in fine form singing and telling a story of sex with a mother and daughter and having to leave that scene and join a band. Side four has two songs “Hallelujah I Love Her So” by Ray Charles and “I Don’t Need No Doctor” by Ashford and Simpson. That song is one of my favorite “crank it up” songs and has been blasted out of many different stereo’s I have owned. Frampton’s solo in that song is one of my favorite guitar solos of all time,in fact his playing on the whole record is awesome. After this tour he left to go solo. When Frampton Comes Alive was released the solos on that record were very familiar to me since I had been listening to him play live since 1972. Not only one of my favorite live albums but a favorite album in general. After hundreds of listens the record still sounds good. No skips. About five years ago a complete set of all four shows(early and late) was released.
