Hot Tuna-First Pull Up Then Pull Down

original

This is their second album from 1971. Recorded live it was electric as opposed to their first album that was acoustic. I probably bought this around 1975. A really good record with lots of jamming. This line-up has founders Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassidy with Sammy Piazza on drums and Papa John Creach on violin. Being a big fan of Jefferson Airplane/Starship this was a record I had to check out. Playing mostly Blues covers the record opens with “John’s Other” an instrumental by Creach followed by “Candy Man” a Reverend Gary Davis tune ,”Been So Long” the only original song. Side two has “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning” another Davis song and “Come Back Baby” both long songs with lots of guitar and violin. In my opinion their best record. When I saw Jefferson Starship in Reading in 1992 a frail looking Papa John Creach was helped on stage to play violin on a few songs. Although in his 70’s he sat in a chair a played pretty well. He died two years later of heart failure.
