Hawkwind-The Hawkwind Collection

Another one from The Collector Series. These all came out in the 80’s ,this one from ’86 and is a U.K. import. Most of the tracks are live with a few studio tracks. There are no liner notes except for song title and writer. It’s a rather uneven collection but one I really like. Two blues covers ,one “Bring It On Home” by Willie Dixon seem from a very early period of the band with someone playing harmonica while others like the two by Harvey Bainbridge “Douglas In The Jungle” and “Ghost Dance” delve into World Music territory. Side one leads off with a live version of “Silver Machine” their best known song and also has “Born To Go” and “Urban Guerilla”. Side two has more live cuts,”Master Of The Universe”,”Who’s Gonna Win The War”,with heavy guitar by Dave Brock, that just fades into “Hash Cake ’77,a jam that ends after about four and a half minutes. The last song on the side is “Motorhead” the final song Lemmy wrote before being kicked out of the band. Side three has a studio version of “Quark, Strangeness and Charm” and “Space Is Deep” and “Earth Calling” from the Space Ritual album. Side four at over 28 minutes long was always my favorite with live versions of “Angels Of Death”,which is a reworking of “Magnu,”Spirit Of The Age”,”Ghost Dance” and two more jams “You Shouldn’t Do That” and “We Do It”. A really good record, any of the four sides filled with trippy, spacey music.
