This is the first record by Hawkwind I bought in 1975 when it came out and is still my favorite. Formed in 1969 they have put out over 40 records including live albums and side projects. I has 15 or 20 of their records on cassette and CD. This album has the classic line-up of founder Dave Brock on guitar and vocals,Nik Turner on sax and flute,Simon House on keyboards and violin,Lemmy on bass and two drummers. The record is based on a book by Science Fiction writer Michael Moorcock who worked with the band on different occasions. Side one of the record flows from track to track starting with “Assault And Battery” into “The Golden Void” which has been redone for later albums. Next is “The Wizard Blew His Horn” one of three short poems voiced by Moorcock over synthesizers by House and percussion. This segues into “Opa-Loka” an instrumental with a relentless pounding beat before ending with the acoustic “The Demented Man”. Side two starts with the Heavy sounding “Mangu” with lots of sax by Turner and chanting, another element of Hawkwind’s music, followed by two more Moorcock poems with “Spiral Galaxy 29848” an instrumental by House in between. The record ends with the straight out rocker “Kings Of Speed”.This is the last record with this line-up as Lemmy left to form Motorhead and Turner left shortly after to go solo. A really great record and one that still sounds good although there are a couple skips on side two.
