The Great Society-Conspicuous Only In It’s Absence

The Great Society were a San Francisco band whose members included Grace Slick, her husband at the time Jerry Slick, and his brother Darby Slick. Together for barely two years they broke up after Grace joined Jefferson Airplane in 1967.This is a live recording from The Matrix in 1966. The album was released in 1968. It’s a good example of the San Francisco Psychedelic sound of the 60’s. Starting off with “Sally Go Round The Roses” they cover a Dylan song and some originals including “Somebody To Love” written by Darby Slick and played a little slower and Folksier than the later version done by Jefferson Airplane. There is also an instrumental “Arbitration” with some sax by Peter Van Gelder that goes into Grace’s own “White Rabbit” showing off her distinctive vocal talent. This is a used record I bought about five years ago. It’s an original pressing and the record and cover are in good shape. I think I paid ten dollars for it. I used to have it on CD.
