Go-Go

Go is a project formed by Japanese keyboard player and percussionist Stomu Yamashta. Also in the band are Michael Shrieve from Santana,Steve Winwood,Klaus Schulze, and Al Di Meola. It’s a concept album about a Kung-Fu fighter who beats everyone only to finally be bested by another who blinds him in the process. He then retreats to “nature” where he learns to overcome his blindness and returns to beat his rival. For some reason the story starts on side two and continues on side one. It also has something to do with the game Go. It’s all explained in the booklet that came with the record that has liner notes and lyrics. The record is about half instrumental, sometimes sounding like Tangerine Dream with Schulze’s synthesizers, other times like Santana on the song “Ghost Machine” with Al Di Meola playing guitar. Most of the songs are around three minutes or less, the exceptions being two sung by Steve Winwood “Winner/Loser” and “Crossing The Line” the best song on the record and included on Winwood’s box set. An interesting record that doesn’t easily fit into any genre. The record came out in 1976 and I bought it in 2015,it still has the $2.00 price tag on it. It’s a little scratchy but no skips.
