Genesis-Seconds Out

original

This live album was released in 1977. Most of the songs were recorded in Paris in 1977 except for “The Cinema Show” that was recorded in 1976. Bill Bruford was the drummer on the ’76 tour and Chester Thompson, from Frank Zappa’s band,on the ’77 tour. There was also a drum set for Collins to play when he wasn’t singing. The material was mostly drawn from Selling England By The Pound and A Trick Of The Tail. Two songs are from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway,”The Carpet Crawl” and the title track that segues into the closing section of “The Musical Box” with Collins sounding much like Peter Gabriel although he is not trying to imitate him, from his first vocals on the Nursery Cryme album you could hear that they both has similar sounding voices. Side three is taken up by “Suppers Ready” and it is played fairly close to the studio version. Side four starts with “The Cinema Show” and ends with “Dance On A Volcano/Los Endos”. After this tour Steve Hackett announced that he was leaving the band. Collins,Banks, and Rutherford continued on as a trio. The record I have is the English import on The Famous Charisma Label. It was available as an import weeks before the U.S. release on Atlantic Records. The cover is not in good shape although it has no water damage. The record sounds OK,another on that was played a lot, with some scratchiness but no skips.
