Genesis-Selling England By The Pound

original

This 1973 album is one I always called my favorite and after listening to this one today it still is. This was a gift from my parents on Christmas 1973. I’m sure I gave them plenty of hints that I wanted it.Ever song on this record is great. “Dancing Out With The Moonlight Knight” makes me think of my High School because their football team were called the Green Knights and the school paper was called the Green Shield. I love the kind of spacey fade out.”I Know What I Like(In Your Wardrobe)” got a lot of airplay and was always a favorite.”Firth Of Fifth” has a kind of classical sounding piano intro and later a guitar solo by Steve Hackett. Side two starts with “The Battle Of Epping Forest” my favorite on the record.Peter Gabriel saw an article about territory fights by rival gangs and wrote the song around it.He uses different voices for characters in this song as he did in “Get ‘Em Out By Friday” and “Harold The Barrel”. After a short classical style guitar solo by Hackett the last song is “The Cinema Show”. This features some harmonies by Gabriel and Collins and a solo on flute and a long keyboard solo by Tony Banks. Played hundreds of times the cover has some water damage and the record is pretty scratchy sounding. There was a lyric sheet and liner notes with the record but it has been lost. I’m on the lookout for a good vintage copy of the record but will keep this one because it was a gift from my parents.
