Genesis-Foxtrot

Another one of my favorite bands, this was the first record I bought of theirs. After hearing “Watcher In The Sky”,a kind of science fiction story,I sought this album out. Released in 1972,their fourth record, I probably bought it in ’73 or ’74 when I also bought Nursery Crime and Genesis Live. Side one stats with “Watcher Of The Skies”with the great mellotron opening by Tony Banks with lyrics based on the science fiction story “Childhoods End” and The Watcher comic book series.A really great song and one of my favorite Prog Rock songs. “Time Table” is a quiet song leading into “Get”Em Out By Friday” a quirky song were Peter Gabriel sings four parts in different voices. The song s about an evil landlord evicting and relocating tenants to a tower block. The song always reminded me of a Monty Python bit with the part about Genetic Control limiting human height to four feet so they could put more people in a flat.Side two opens with a short instrumental by Steve Hackett, “Horizons” followed by their 23 minute epic “Suppers Ready”. One of my favorite side long Progressive pieces the song is similar in style to Van der Graff Generator’s “A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers” another side long song from the same time period. The song has seven parts that flow pretty smoothly from one to another. Their longest song and certainly one of their best it was a highlight of their early concerts. When I saw them on the Duke tour in 1980 they played parts of the song in a medley of older tunes. The cover is by Paul Whitehead, who also did covers for Van der Graff Generator, and shows the cover of Nursery Crime in the background of the gatefold cover. This record and Nursery Crime were stuck together from the water damage at the Franklin Street rental and when pulled apart it ripped some of the printing from both covers. Ther record sounds good,a little scratchy sounding on the quiet parts and has one skip on “Suppers Ready”.Not bad for a record I bought over 45 years ago and played many man times.
