Fairport Convention-“Babbacombe” Lee

original

This 1971 album has only Simon Nicol remaining from the original line-up with Dave Mattacks,Dave Swarbrick, and new bassist Dave Pegg rounding out the band.Called a Folk Opera this record tells the story of John “Babbacombe” Lee a man who was accused of murder and was sentenced to be hung. The gallows failed three times and according to British Law he was spared. The music is good but it must be listened to as a whole. The “Songs” don’t play well by themselves without the context of the whole story. Sandy Denny returned to sing backup vocals on one part on side two. Predictably the record did not sell well and I bought it from a bin selling cutouts for 29 cents probably in 1973. The cover is a photograph of John Lee and his mother.
