Electric Light Orchestra-Face The Music

original

This one came out in 1975 when I bought it. This album marked a new phase of the band with less orchestration/Classical sound with Lynn’s songs taking a more Pop/Beatlesque direction. Strings are still prominent but used more as a backup instrument. Another record that got played a lot in my apartment days, especially “Fire On High” with it’s backward messaging at the beginning of the lead- off instrumental track. It is followed by “Waterfall” a slower song and “Evil Woman” a big hit for the band and a favorite of mine. The side closes with “Nightrider” another good uptempo song. Side two starts with “Poker” another rocker sung by Bass player Kelly Groucutt.”Strange Magic” was another big selling single and another favorite on the record. “Down Home Town” seems to be a parody of country music with the strings sounding like a fiddle and Lynn singing in a bit of a southern twang. The song also references “Land Of Dixie” singing a few lines at the end. The record ends with “One Summer Dream” a quiet ballad but a good one. The band started to gain worldwide popularity with this record but the next record would take them to the top.
