Bob Dylan-Blood On The Tracks

original

This record came out in January of 1975 and I immediately bought it after hearing “Tangled Up In Blue” on the radio. The songs on this record are said to be about his separation from his wife Sara but Dylan has denied this. Listening to many of the songs it’s hard not to see them as autobiographical. “Idiot Wind” is a vicious attack on a woman, followed on the record with “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go”. The first line in the second verse in “Tangled Up In Blue” You were married when we first met, soon to be divorced, describes the circumstances when Bob met Sara in the early 60’s. Many of the other songs are about love/breakup like “Simple Twist Of Fate,”You’re A Big Girl Now”,and “If You See Her Say Hello”. Instrumentally the songs have simple acoustic backing with the exception of the Blues of “Meet Me In The Morning”. He used various musicians on the record including Eric Weissberg of “Dueling Banjos” fame and Steel guitarist Buddy Cage from New Riders Of The Purple Sage. Before the record was released Dylan re-recorded five of the tracks with different musicians. Overall this is a great album, considered to be one of his best but not my favorite, that would be Desire, his next record.
