Drive-By-Truckers-English Oceans

This album came out in 2014. It is a three sided record, the fourth side being blank. Some three sided records that I own have an etching on the fourth side, one has uncredited instrumental music by the band. Anyway after Shonna Tucker left she was replaced by new bassist Mike Patton with Cooley,Hood and longtime drummer Brad Morgan being augmented by Jay Gonzales on keyboards and guitars. With only two songwriters in the band Cooley has six songs on this record, all good ones. I had only listened to side one before this because it was so good I never wanted to put on another side. Side one has two great Cooley songs “Shit Shots Count” and “Primer Coat” and two of Hood’s songs “When He’s Gone” and “Pauline Hawkins” that has a long instrumental fade out as many of their songs do.Listening to the other two sides for the first time I decided I like this record better than the last two.Side two has two more good Cooley songs “Made Up English Oceans” and “Hearing Jimmy Loud” and “Hanging On” a rare acoustic song by Hood and a good one. Side three has “First Air Of Autumn” Cooley’s only acoustic song on the record and the side closes with Hood’s “Grand Canyon” possibly my favorite song on the album.
