Miles Davis-The Essential Miles Davis

Hard to cover a 40 plus year carer on two records but these selections are all pretty good. I do have a 4 cassette box set that covers his work for Colombia Records. This was a 2 Cd set originally and was released on vinyl with 14 songs. It starts off with his earliest work from 1945 with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Next comes “Round Midnight” and “Bye Bye Blackbird” from his 1957 album Round Midnight. “Generique” and ” So What” are songs that I liked that are on the box set. “The Pan Piper” is from Sketches Of Spain one of his many collaborations with Gil Evans. “E.S.P.” and “Nefertiti” are from his mid 60’s group featuring Wayne Shorter,Herbie Hancock,Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. In the late 60’s he became interested in Rock,Funk,African rhythms, and electronic music and “Miles Runs The Voodoo Down” from Bitches Brew and “Black Satin” from On The Corner are from this period. It ends with “Time After Time”,the Cyndi Lauper song, from his ’84 album You’re Under Arrest. Miles had a knack for putting talented musicians together in his bands.I had about 40 of his albums on cassette and Cd but sold them in 2013. I do have digital copies of them though. Not as good as having the hard copy but at least I can listen to them. He was plagued with drug addiction and health problems most of his life and he died in 1991 from a combination of a stroke and pneumonia.
