Alice Cooper-School’s Out

original

This came out in 1972 and is their second best selling album thanks to the single “School’s Out”. The record was packaged so the back cover had “legs” that would fold out making it stand up like a desk. Lifting the top of the desk would reveal the record inside. The record came in a sleeve shaped like a pair of panties but that has long since been lost. This seems to be some kind of concept album about school and time after school. The title song is another youth anthem like “I’m Eighteen” and was a big top 40 hit. “Gutter Cat Vs. The Jets” is another song I remember hearing on AM radio. That song has some great bass playing and incorporates a bit of West Side Story in it. Closing out side one is “Blue Turk” my favorite song on the record. This rather funky song has some great horns in it. Side two has “My Stars” and “Public Enemy No. 9” both good songs. “Alma Mater” finds someone musing about the last day of school and turns into “Grande Finale” with the return of the horns and even some orchestration. A pretty good record but nat as consistent as Killer or Love It To Death.
