This is Coltrane,s best known work and is considered a Jazz masterpiece. Religious in nature, this four part composition of 33 minutes was released in January of 1965. It opens with the four note main theme played on bass, then variations played on saxophone.Later Coltrane chants “A Love Supreme” many times. Later on there are some piano solos backed by some frantic drumming.Side two has some drum and bass solos and closes with some mellow sax with what sounds like kettle drums in the background. To me this doesn’t sound much different than any other Jazz record I have heard but I do like it and Jazz in general.I love the improvisation and long solos in Jazz. Also the different instruments involved. You can start with the basic trio of piano, bass, and drums, of which there are many and add saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, guitar, violin, vibes or whatever making an interesting mix.
